New Holland - Middletown District #88 receives $25,000 State Farm award
As a thank you, State Farm agents were presented with a photo of all the students that was also signed by all of them.

Area State Farm agents were on hand to present the school with a check for $25,000 which the school won during a national vote. Karen Davison said she initially was very excited when she heard that NH-M was one of 200 finalists chosen by State Farm to win one of the neighborhood grant sums but said she was nervous when she saw other finalists were schools in much larger cities. The program allowed supporters 19 days to vote for their school online and a strong support network within the community ended up bringing in 49,728 votes. (Click for more)

Items such as laptops and Smartboards and educational software programs will now be available to students thanks to the hard work of the school, the fundraising committee and State Farm.

 
Search begins for new Logan County Tourism Executive Director

Relay For Life of Logan Co. approaches the one million dollar goal
May 23, 2013, This year marks the 16th year of Relay for Life in Logan County and it will be a million dollar milestone for our county as well. This year we will honor HERO’S – PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE as we Relay on Lincoln College campus track 6:00 p.m., Friday, June 14 until 6:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 15. Cancer has created many heroes who we will be remembering: past survivor heroes, present survivor heroes, and until we find that cure, unfortunately, future survivor heroes. Humane Society says thanks for garage sale success

Lincoln Memorial Day Service schedule
May 23 2013, The traditional Memorial Day services will be held Monday, May 27 at 10:30 am at the Lincoln American Legion Post 263. Pastor Mark Thompson of Zion Lutheran Church will be the guest speaker and will give the invocation and benediction. Taps will be played and the Legion Honor Guard and Ladies Auxiliary will honor all veterans. Ham and beans will be served following the service. All citizens of Lincoln and the surrounding area are asked to please take the time to honor and remember those men and women who gave their lives to keep this country free. Remember that freedom is not free.

Anne Sydney Named Nurse of the Year at ALMH
May 22, 2013,  After more than more than three decades of caring for the sick and injured at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital, Anne Sydney, RN, BSN, of Lincoln was named the 2013 Nurse of the Year.

Sydney began her career at ALMH in July 1977 and has always worked in the Emergency Department. She holds an RN from Decatur Memorial Hospital and a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from SIU Edwardsville. She also holds a variety of certifications including: Emergency Communication Registered Nurse (ECRN), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), and Trauma Nurse Specialist (TNS). Zonta’s Young Women in Public Affairs Scholarship goes to Melissa Anne Studach

Carroll Catholic thanks volunteers with a dinner

This year all school volunteers and teachers were invited to the chicken dinner in the school's cafeteria. Judy Gordon will be retiring from her duties managing the kitchen and she and her culinary skills will be missed. Family Fun Day Run/Walk this Saturday, May 25
May 22, 2013, This Saturday is the 1st Annual Family Fun Day 5K Run / Walk. The race starts at 8 AM. Registration takes place Saturday from 6:30 AM - 7:45 AM. The cost is $25.00 per entry. T-Shirts are available as long as they last. Also, you may purchase a T-Shirt without running in the race for $10.00. Medals will be given to different age groups both male and female and a trophy to the overall winner! Free Door Prizes, Anytime Fitness memberships, gift cards, etc. will be given away as door prizes. Also, there will be a 50/50 drawing. A free pancake breakfast will follow for the participants and their families.
 
Lincoln Area Running Club news
May 22, 2013, The Lincoln Area Running Club is adding an additional weekly group run this summer. Starting on June 6 the group will meet at Postville Park on Thursday evenings at 6:30. This will be in addition to the current weekly Sunday morning group run at 6:30 a.m. at Postville Park. All ages, paces and ability levels are welcome! May 20, 2013, By Mike Fak, The stop-smoking industry is big money in America. As many as 35 million Americans try to quit every year with mixed results. That number is about half the number of estimated smokers, showing that almost everyone, including chain smokers know they shouldn’t smoke.

For the past few decades nicotine gum and patches by prescription were the only options to a smoker outside of quitting “cold turkey”. Now gum and patches can be bought over the counter and although they have helped many smokers, for many the products just didn’t do enough to help the smoker quit. (Click for more)

Master Gardeners 14th annual plant sale another success

With thousands of plants to choose from, everyone was able to fill their flats with everything they needed for their home gardens. New Holland Middletown students present check to Humane Society
May 20, 2013, Friday morning Mary Dowdel, Lynn White and HSLC guests Baby Girl, Lady and Bubba went to New Holland/Middletown School to attend the annual award presentations. While the humans cheered when the children received their awards, Baby Girl and Bubba barked their approval. The children loved it.

At the presentation, HSLC was presented with a total of $245.00 that had been raised by the various classrooms in honor of a beloved classroom bunny, Juliet, who passed away. (Click for more)
 
LCGHS meeting change for May 20
May 20, 2013, The Logan County Genealogical and Historical Society will host its monthly program at 6:30 p.m., Monday, May 20, at 114 N. Chicago, Lincoln. An unexpected cancellation has changed the program and location for the May event. Diane Osborne, an LCGHS board member, will share stories discovered during her research for a book-in-progress about historic and older homes in Lincoln and Postville. The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served after the presentation.

Neighborhood Vacation Bible School registration begins
May 18, 2013, The Lincoln Area Neighborhood VBS presents "ATHENS - Paul's Dangerous Adventure to Share the Truth" which will be held Monday July 8 through Friday July 12, 2013 from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM for all children preschool age to 6th grade. Churches working together for this years Neighborhood VBS are First United Methodist Church, First Presbyterian Church, Cumberland Presbyterian Church, First Baptist Church, St John United Church of Christ, and Immanuel Lutheran Church. Integrity Data releases award winners

May 18, 2013, The staff at Uncle Buck's held their ribbon cut on Friday. The trading post on Woodlawn Road has been in operation for almost a year. The business has in their huge store, musical equipment, electronics, collectibles and everything else in between.
 
A little gardening at City Hall
May 18, 2013, Lincoln Fire Inspector, Tim Aper watches at Fire Chief Mark Miller plants another flower around one of the trees surrounding Lincoln's City Hall and the fire station. Since the chief has seniority, he will have to buy lunch for the shift for having his picture in the media.
